Sales of Tesla vehicles in 32 European countries tumbled 49% to 7,261 in April from 14,228 in the same month the previous year, according to the figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association,

Tesla sold 7,261 vehicles in the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and U.K., a 49% year-over-year decline.

According to the latest UBS Evidence Lab EV Survey, BYD surpassed Tesla as the “top choice” for EV brands in China. The survey, which includes over 10,000 respondents, shows only 14% now consider Tesla as their top choice, down from 18% last year.

Data from JATO Dynamics shows that BYD’s Europe volumes rose 359% in April from last year as the company continues its global expansion efforts.

When you look at sales at the brand level, things get a little worse for the American automaker. Volkswagen sold more EVs than anyone else in Europe last month, increasing by 61 percent to 23,514 units. As for Tesla? It fell to 11th place, with just 7,165 sales in total, a 49 percent decrease year on year.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, registrations for new Tesla EVs in Europe plunged 49% in April compared to last year. That came despite a 34% surge in overall battery electric car sales there.
