Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed the proposed ban on hemp-derived THC late on Sunday, but told lawmakers he would be calling them back to Austin next month to impose some regulation on an industry that has grown dramatically in recent years with little state oversight.

The special session will begin on July 21 for lawmakers to tackle bills that were vetoed during the 89th Legislative Session, including Senate Bill 3.

The governor of Texas blocked what would have been one of the nation’s strictest bans on hemp products, and directed legislators to take up regulation of hemp in a special session.
