President Donald Trump‘s handling of former President Joe Biden‘s recent prostate cancer diagnosis has vacillated between expressing sympathy over the seriousness of the illness and calling for transparency surrounding his predecessor’s tenure.

Twenty-four hours after the Sunday announcement that former President Joe Biden has an aggressive form of prostate cancer, one of his staunchest supporters, Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, said Monday he had yet to connect with him. Another close Hill ally, Sen. Chris Coons, had not spoken with his fellow Delawarean as of midafternoon Tuesday.

The former president released his first statement on X Monday morning, alongside a picture of him and his wife, Jill Biden, a day after the announcement: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
