Walk for Freedom attendees celebrate Juneteenth while honoring Opal Lee, despite her absence
The Walk for Freedom is held on Juneteenth to mark the two-and-a-half-year delay between the Emancipation Proclamation and the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. Lee, known as the grandmother of Juneteenth, cemented June 19's status as a national holiday in 2021 after years of advocacy, which included a 1,400-mile trek to Washington, D.C.
