James Gunn‘s Superman has taken flight at the box office. The highly anticipated superhero tentpole, from DC Studios and Warner Bros., earned $22.5 million in Thursday previews and other sneak showings at the North American box office.

As James Gunn’s Superman surges to more than $22 million in box office previews (along with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the filmmaker reportedly is looking ahead to the possibility of at least two TV spinoffs.

Though “Superman” will handily soar to the top of box office charts, the Last Son of Krypton could face headwinds from fellow summer blockbuster “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Then another comic book epic, Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” arrives at the end of the month.
