A routine walk to the mail box turned deadly for 84-year-old man, when he was backed over by a postal carrier van, according to investigators on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It happened around 2 p.m.

James Hofler, an 84-year-old Navy veteran from North Carolina, was crossing the street to check his mailbox when he was struck by a USPS mail delivery truck, according to a police press release.

James Hofler was taken to the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head and later “transferred to a higher-level medical facility” on the mainland, police said.

Police say a 2021 Mercedes-Benz mail carrier truck was backing up northbound on Portsmouth Street when it hit 84-year-old James Hofler, who was walking across the road to check his mailbox.
