On July 24, 2005 — King County, Washington, was officially renamed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was a long time coming. King County was originally named after U.S. Vice President Rufus de Vane King in 1852. King was a plantation owner in Alabama who reportedly owned between 250 and 500 slaves.
In Indianapolis on April 4th, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy announced to a waiting crowd that Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated. Author Ray Boomhower recounted the events leading up to RFK's speech and the impact it had on the city.
The release of National Archives documents is the latest attempt to define what the Civil Rights icon believed, and what that means now for the country.
