A tsunami advisory has expired for parts of California after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula​, prompting concern.

The National Weather Service says tsunami advisories are now lifted for most of the Northern California coast as of late Wednesday morning after the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake sent waves across the Pacific.

Tsunami advisory has been cancelled for Bay Area, Central Coast, but officials urge caution as dangerous coastal conditions expected through the day.

The advisory includes the San Francisco Bay Area, including Sonoma, Napa, Larkspur, Vallejo, San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Santa Cruz, Monterey and other ocean and bayside communities.

Tsunami warnings are being downgraded in most areas following one of this century’s most powerful earthquakes in Russia.

The sixth-strongest earthquake ever recorded triggered waves several feet high hurtling towards coastal areas worldwide.Countries in and around the Pacific Ocean announced varying degrees of alerts for anticipated tsunamis.

Tsunami warnings prompted gridlocked traffic as people tried to reach higher elevations in Hawaii, but the threat level was later downgraded.
