Patrick Mahomes underwent surgery Monday evening to repair the torn ACL in his left knee that he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Also, per multiple reports, Mahomes had his LCL repaired during the procedure.
That's Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs' Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance. And while he provided some concrete thoughts, he also made Mahomes' injury return timeline quite a bit more confusing, at least if you squint.
The NFL has implemented rule changes in recent seasons aimed at reducing lower-body injuries, including the ban on hip-drop tackles. Still, experts say the nature of the sport, built on speed, power, and rapid changes in direction, means ACL injuries remain a risk.
ACL tears can occur in any sport with sharp twisting and turning movements, and can be prevented with good strength training, proper foot placement, and avoiding slippery areas.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Packers DE Micah Parsons has a "clean" ACL tear and has a "good chance" of being back for the start of the 2026 season.
The 2026 NFL season begins the weekend of Sunday, Sept. 13, and the Chiefs will take every day they can get. Their clock has already started.
