Longtime Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, who has garnered “ serious ” interest from the Red Sox this offseason, expressed willingness to shift to second base, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported Wednesday during an appearance on MLB Network.
Bichette sprained his left knee on Sept. 6 after a collision with Yankees catcher Austin Wells, and went on to miss the remainder of the regular season, as well as the American League Division Series and the American League Championship Series, before returning for Game 1 of the World Series at an unfamiliar position: second base.
Historically shortstops are paid more than second basemen because of their value defensively. But Bichette could be an outlier in this situation by the sheer offensive upside he brings. In other words, teams are buying his bat, not his glove, a reality Bichette apparently is willing to acknowledge.
Bo Bichette has informed teams he is willing to play second base moving forward, Mark Feinsand of MLB Network reports.
