Friday's boys basketball: Kameryn Kennerly guides Coventry to a win; CVCA remains undefeated in North Coast Conference COVENTRY 76, CLOVERLEAF 63: Comets' head coach Devon McAfee notched his 70th win at the helm of Coventry, as the hosts cruised to a Metro win on Friday. Coventry (10-5, 6-3) led by 32 points heading into the fourth quarter. Senior Kameryn Kennerly led all scorers with 26 points. Alex Meinen scored 22 points, while Justus Stephens added 12 and Reggie Edwards 11.NORTON 57, FIELD 53: Luke Martell's 16 points and Issac Hunter's 15 points led the Panthers (6-6, 5-3) to a Metro Athletic Conference win over the visiting Falcons (5-7, 2-6).STREETSBORO 69, SPRINGFIELD 16: The Rockets shut down the visiting Spartans in a Metro win Friday. Jack Batten scored 13 points and Charles Ivory had 10 as Streetsboro improved to 11-2 overall and 8-0 to remain atop the Metro Athletic Conference.NORTHWEST 61, TRIWAY 51: Chase Badger scored 20 points, Tyler Pappas had 13 and Tristan Pennington recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as Northwest won a Principals Athletic Conference matchup at Triway. Northwest improved to 9-4 overall and 7-0 in league play to remain atop the PAC standings.CVCA 82, ELYRIA CATHOLIC 41: A pair of 20-point nights by Niles Nuru and Tony Collins led the host Royals (9-6, 5-0) to a North Coast Conference victory. Tyler Hysolli contributed 12 points for CVCA. Friday's girls basketball: Copley, CVCA, Kent Roosevelt earn wins COPLEY 49, BARBERTON 22: Evelyn McKnight scored 19 points to lead Copley to a win. Zoey Van Voorhis contributed 12 points and Amelia Davis chipped in 10 points.CVCA 30, ELYRIA CATHOLIC 21: Joi Williams scored 15 points to guide CVCA (10-5, 7-1 NCC) to a victory over EC (10-4, 6-1 NCC). Sofia Schroeter finished with seven points for the Royals.KENT ROOSEVELT 54, AURORA 47: Julia Nash poured in a game-high 20 points as the Rough Riders won a Suburban League game on Friday. Mahlia Friedman and Claire Vandamme each added 11 points as the Rough Riders moved to 10-7 overall and 5-6 in the Suburban's American Conference. Thursday's boys basketball: DeCarlo Prince and John Whorton guide STVM to win over Hoban ST. VINCENT-ST MARY 51, ARCHBISHOP HOBAN 43: Junior DeCarlo Prince scored 19 points and senior John Whorton contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds to guide the Irish (6-5) past the Knights (10-1) at the University of Akron's Rhodes Arena. Prince made 6 of 10 shots from the field, including 2 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 5 of 6 free throws. He also had two blocks. "We knew coming into the game that John was going to be the key," said Prince, who is 6-foot-4 and 191 pounds. "Every game, John is the key. All season, John is the key. We gotta get him the ball to get everybody else open." Whorton made 7 of 10 shots from the field, including 2 of 2 from beyond the 3-point arc, and 1 of 2 free throws. "We brought defensive intensity," said Whorton, who is 6-10 and 225 pounds. "When we play great defense it turns into easy points on offense. When we control the tempo, we end up doing well and we play as a team." Senior James McCarthy paced Hoban with 16 points and junior Sam Greer contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Hoban jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 7-3 before STVM compiled a 15-0 run to lead 18-7 with 7:15 to go in the second quarter. The Irish led 26-15 at halftime, 34-26 through three quarters and 41-38 with 2:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. STVM junior Leigh Cotton totaled six points, six rebounds and two blocks, freshman Ascen Lomack had two points and five assists and sophomore Justin Robinson scored three points. "I thought the communication was good," STVM coach Dru Joyce II said. "Early on, we got the ball downhill and we got the ball in John's hands. John was just big with some of the tips and putbacks that he had. He had a couple of one-handers. Those are just big. When you get that kind of production it means a lot." Hoban senior Kenny Scott had eight points and two steals and sophomore John Johnson finished with three points and three steals. Thursday's girls basketball: Manchester rolls to easy win over Lake Center Christian MANCHESTER 52, LAKE CENTER CHRISTIAN 24: The Panthers broke a 12-game losing streak with a nonleague win over Lake Center Christian. Eleven Panthers scored, led by Charlee Winebrenner with 13 points and Skylar Young with 11. Thursday's girls swimming: Kent Roosevelt tops Aurora KENT ROOSEVELT 123, AURORA 62: The Rough Riders downed the Greenmen for their seventh consecutive dual meet and third Suburban League win. Coco Golden won the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley for Kent. Other double winners for the Rough Riders were Trinity Heath (50 and 100 freestyle) and Natalie St. John (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke). Thursday's boys bowling: 1-loss Highland handles Kent Roosevelt HIGHLAND 2,610, KENT ROOSEVELT 2,363: Senior Gabe Kasper led Highland over the Rough Riders at Kent Lanes. Kasper rolled games of 200 and 247 and recorded two turkeys. Senior Tyler Oboy rolled a 438 series and sophomore Gracie Dunn had 430 two-game total for Highland (8-1). Wednesday's girls basketball: Highland, Copley, Hudson earn victories HIGHLAND 44, KENT ROOSEVELT 31: The Hornets moved to 16-0 overall posting a Suburban League National Conference win Wednesday over the Rough Riders (9-7, 4-6). Aleena Vankirk pumped in 18 points for Highland (16-0, 10-0) and Kennedy Morgan added 10 points and a team-high five rebounds.COPLEY 38, CUYAHOGA FALLS 37: Copley just got past the host Black Tigers on Wednesday. Junior Audrey Parker led all scorers with 17 points for Copley (11-3, 9-1 Suburban American). Sophomore's Kayce Lee and Madison Richards each scored eight points for Cuyahoga Falls (7-7, 4-6).HUDSON 40, BRECKSVILLE 38: Brecksville took a 38-37 lead with a minute left in the game on three free throws by Bridget Barber but could not hold the lead in a Suburban National matchup . Abby Meacham responded for Hudson with a 10-foot, baseline jumper with :30 to go in the game to put the Explorers up 39-38. Hudson (11-3, 7-3) stopped Brecksville's next possession, forcing the Bees to foul Corinne Steans. Steans mad her second free throw with 5.2 seconds left in the game to make the score 40-38 before Elora Beh stole the ball from Brecksville's Barber to dribble out the clock. Erin McCormick led all players with 14 points for Hudson. Beh scored six points and Meacham finished with four. Barber and Jossie Hackney each scored 10 points for Brecksville (11-3, 7-2).WARREN JFK 62, MOGADORE 32: The host Eagles defense shut down Mogadore to their lowest point total of the season in a Portage Trail Conference game. Didi Ryan scored 20 points for JFK (12-3, 3-1). Mogadore fell to 12-3 overall and 2-3 in the league.CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC 46, WALSH JESUIT 40: Grace Finefrock scored 16 points and Lily Belden added 12 points and nine rebounds as the Crusaders improved to 9-5 on the season. Walsh dropped to 7-6. Wednesday's boys basketball: Streetsboro, Woodridge win STREETSBORO 59, COVENTRY 43: Jack Batten scored 22 points to lead a trio of Rockets that scored in double figures, as Streetsboro remained atop the Metro Athletic Conference. Charles Ivory added 12 points and Jackson Gula scored 11 as the visiting Rockets moved to 11-2 overall and 8-0 in league play. Coventry fell to 9-5 and 5-3 in the Metro.WOODRIDGE 76, FIELD 57: The Bulldogs (7-4, 6-2) remained in second place in the Metro as Blake Williams put up 17 points. Brayden Ronowski's 15 point night led Field (5-7, 2-6). Wednesday's boys bowling: Buchtel tops Hoban BUCHTEL 2,198, ARCHBISHOP HOBAN 2,077: Marcus Brown rolled a team-high game of 220 and 2-game series of 424 to lead the Griffins to a 121 pin margin of victory at AMF Riviera Lanes. Tuesday's boys basketball: STVM, Hoban, CVCA, Tallmadge earn wins ST. VINCENT-ST. MARY 59, LAKEWOOD ST. EDWARD 55: Senior John Whorton missed just one field goal attempt and scored 21 points to lead the Irish (5-5) to a win over visiting St. Edward (9-4). Leigh Cotton added 10 points for STVM.ARCHBISHOP HOBAN 58, WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS 56 (OT): The Knights ran their season record to 10-0 with an overtime win Tuesday at Warrensville Heights (9-3). Sam Greer led Hoban with 20 points and Kenny Scott scored 19, setting up Thursday's matchup at the University of Akron against St. Vincent-St. Mary. Noah Chambers led all scorers with 22 points for the Tigers.CVCA 58, WALSH JESUIT 33: The Royals improved to 8-6 overall as Tony Collins pumped in 22 points in a non-league win over the visiting Warriors (2-10). Paul Rusinko's 24-point night helped Tallmadge improve to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the league. Kaden Davis scored 18 points and Chad Rusinko added 10 in the home win. Tuesday boys bowling: Bulldogs take Federal League match GREEN 2,409, JACKSON 2,313: Antony Bordonaro led Green with a 433 series and Robert Boley rolled a season-high 227 game for a 411 series, as the Bulldogs posted a Federal League victory. Monday's girls basketball: Highland remains undefeated ST. VINCENT-ST. MARY 61, RICHMOND HEIGHTS 35: Kendal Batchik, who earlier this season set the new standard for career 3-point goals at St. Vincent-St. Mary, connected for five on Monday to finish with a team-high 19 points. Denni Lawrence added 14 points in the Irish (13-1) win over the visiting Spartans (9-4).HIGHLAND 51, MEDINA 45: The Hornets (15-0) held the Bees (10-3) to 8-of-51 from the field and survived a 27-of-31 night at the line by Medina. Morgan Kennedy scored 10 of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter for the Hornets and had eight rebounds. Aleena VanKirk added 10 points and eight boards. Olivia Klanec (23 points, five rebounds) led the Bees. MOGADORE 55, OUR LADY OF THE ELMS 15: Amelia Morris scored 14 points as nine Wildcats players scored in Mogadore's non-league win.
