BOSTON — The Red Sox are close to adding a veteran first baseman for the home stretch.

Washington has requested unconditional release waivers on first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, days after it designated him for assignment. “We have young players, and I think we want to see them play,” interim manager Miguel Cairo said earlier this week after the team DFA’d Lowe to make room for the return of Dylan Crews.
