MLB Draft, Reds and by Guardians
Digest more
The Cleveland Guardians have been connected to a trade with the Cincinnati Reds before the MLB trade deadline.
However, he has a strong track record. He's a former All-Star, Gold Glove winner and Silver Slugger. He's also a switch hitter with power. The Guardians are likely to sell this year at the deadline, and Santana is a solid rental piece for a contending team such as the Red Sox.
As the Cincinnati Reds try to claw back into the playoffs, and with the Cleveland Guardians' tumble, they should consider trading for their All-Star outfielder.
However, the Guardians are not willing to even dangle Clase in trade talks, which is somewhat surprising. Playoff contenders desperate for back-end relievers typically give up a lot at the deadline, and Clase may be the most valuable pitcher on the market given his stats and incredibly team-friendly contract.
If the Red Sox look to move anyone, one name that has continued to pop up is Jarren Duran, a young outfielder who has proven to be an All-Star-caliber player.
Boston, currently in the thick of the AL Wild Card race, could benefit from added depth at first base and designated hitter. Santana’s postseason experience and leadership could make him an attractive short-term fit as the Red Sox aim to bolster their roster for a potential playoff push.
Boston has also traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. That certainly has hurt the roster in several ways. Mac Cerullo of The Boston Herald listed Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase as somebody the Red Sox could target at the deadline.
Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona became the 13th manager in MLB history to win 2,000 games when the Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies, 4-2, at Great American Ballpark on Sunday.
