Twenty states are suing the Trump administration, alleging that the Department of Agriculture is improperly attempting to gather sensitive personal information from of low-income families across the country who use food stamps.

In announcing the states’ lawsuit Monday, California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said the “unprecedented” demand “violates all kinds of state and federal privacy laws” and “further breaks the trust between the federal government and the people it serves.

The USDA has threatened to withhold administrative funding if states do not comply, which could severely impact Washington state’s ability to administer SNAP, Brown said.
