Disturbing footage and insider stories resurface as Hollywood reexamines Nick Reiner’s past after a shocking family tragedy.

Rob Reiner spoke to The New Yorker at the time of the movie’s release, explaining that his son had been in and out of rehab through his teens, at facilities around the country. Once he was doing better, Reiner said he felt like it was time to make a movie.

During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, David Manheim, host of the addiction and recovery podcast called “Dopey,” recalled how he formed a close bond with Nick after having the director’s 32-year-old son on his show multiple times since 2016.

He and his father, the director Rob Reiner, also worked together on a film that was loosely inspired by the son’s early life.
