ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle, along with other equity backers of Stargate, have committed $100 billion for immediate deployment, with the remaining investment expected over the next four years, according to the White House. The first of Stargate’s data centers are already under construction in Abilene, Texas.

The companies in Stargate, the new consortium to build out AI infrastructure for OpenAI, are actively considering siting new data center projects in more than a dozen states, OpenAI announced Thursday.

OpenAI executives updated reporters on Thursday about the level of interest the company is seeing from states interested in building large data centers.

The initial data centers for the project are already under construction in Texas, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison had said then. OpenAI is far along in the process of selecting multiple locations in Texas for massive data center projects to support AI services, a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.
