Six gray whales have died in the San Francisco Bay in just the past week alone, bringing the total number of stranded whales to 15 so far this year as authorities rush to figure out what could be causing the sudden deaths.

Five gray whales have died in the greater Bay Area over the past week, bringing the region's 2025 whale death toll to 14, officials announced Wednesday. The California Academy of Sciences and The Marine Mammal Center, which announced the deaths, said they have not responded to this many dead gray whales since 15 in 2021 and 14 in 2019.
