Boston city councilors stood fast in their support of the city’s pro-immigrant Trust Act at a hearing Monday, defying President Donald Trump’s threats to crack down on so-called “sanctuary cities.”

The Boston City Council is set to audit the “implementation and effectiveness” of the Trust Act, a 2014 law that has led to Mayor Michelle Wu facing potential criminal prosecution due to the city’s sanctuary status.

Immigrants and advocates asked Boston City Councilors on Monday to preserve and strengthen the Trust Act, the law that limits police coordination with federal immigration authorities except for on criminal investigations.

On Monday, the City Council is set to hold its own inquiry into the local policy, amid threats to cut federal funding for communities that refuse to assist in the government’s deportation plans.
