The best thing about First Steps is the aesthetic. It’s far and away my favorite part of this film, and that’s a problem because as much as I do enjoy a solid retrofuturistic aesthetic, it’s not enough to make a mediocre movie worth watching. This is all style over substance.

First Steps not only brings the Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also gives them more depth than previous F4 films did.

At the core of First Steps are Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. Each slips easily into their role like a customized astronaut suit, but special praise has to go to Kirby and Moss-Bacharach for giving the ensemble its real heart.

It has been known for some time that Natasha Lyonne would play a major role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, it has been unclear just what that role would be. The mystery remained even after it was revealed she was playing an MCU original character named Rachel Rozman.
