BOSTON — The Red Sox are close to adding a veteran first baseman for the home stretch.

As the Nationals continue to develop and evaluate their young talent, they designated one of their most veteran players for assignment. Washington DFA’d first baseman Nathaniel Lowe to make room for the return of outfielder Dylan Crews,
