Redistricting is one of 18 items on the agenda during the Texas legislative special session that begins July 21.

More eager to play ball is California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has been floating an equal and opposite redistricting response in light of Texas’ proposed moves. “Two can play this game,” Newsom, a widely speculated 2028 hopeful, wrote on X today.

Republicans are looking for a lifeline. They have narrow, fragile control of the House of Representatives and could lose their majority entirely in next year's midterm elections. So the GOP is looking to Texas to provide a buffer.
