Women who aspire to senior leadership roles face a number of systemic, gendered barriers. But a new study found that dealing with the symptoms of menopause doesn’t have to be one of them. Researchers studied 64 middle-aged peri- and postmenopausal women who held senior leadership positions to see if there were any throughlines in the way they navigated changes associated with menopause.

Further analysis showed that women were able to lower their heart risk with smaller amounts of exercise than men were. To lower their risk by 30%, men had to exercise for 530 minutes a week, while women had to be physically active for only 250 minutes a week: about half as long.

For women in this group, around four hours of exercise per week decreased their risk of heart disease by 30 percent. Men in this group required more than 8.5 hours of exercise per week for the same heart health benefits.
