"Galloping Gertie" was the nickname for the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which opened on July 1, 1940, and spectacularly collapsed on November 7, 1940, due to aeroelastic flutter caused by strong winds. It was the third longest suspension bridge in the world at the time and its failure significantly impacted bridge engineering.
