Plague was painted in 1898 by the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901). It shows a female-looking figure of death holding a scythe and riding on a bizarre creature with bat wings. Against an apocalyptic background, they are going through the streets of Medieval town, spreading the plague among everybody who is in their way.
