As wolf pups at the International Wolf Center enter their socialization period, they are gradually introduced to various sights, sounds, and objects they may encounter in the Exhibit Pack. This process, known as conditioning, involves gently familiarizing them with new stimuli until those stimuli are no longer perceived as novel. The goal is to ensure that the pups live as relaxed a life as possible while in our care. At one month old, Cedar and Rowan were introduced to the sights and smells of

One way for our wolf pup ambassadors to cool off in the July heat is by gnawing on meaty ice cubes. In this clip, Cedar is using his puppy teeth, also called milk teeth, to crunch through some ice. This is great practice for using his carnassial teeth to crunch through bones as an adult. Gray wolf pups will start replacing their milk teeth with their adult teeth at around 4 months of age. Cedar here is only 2 months old, so he still has some time before growing in those adult teeth! #wolfpups #i

What do wolves eat? That's a question that's both easy and complicated to answer. Wolves are opportunistic carnivores, meaning they primarily eat meat to survive. Location and the current season often play a significant role in what their prey is, creating a lot of diet variability. In the Arctic tundra, it's common for wolves to hunt caribou and musk oxen during the winter and snowshoe hair in summer. Here in Minnesota, wolves tend to eat more whitetail deer and moose in the winter months. Then

Various animals maintain their cleanliness through different grooming behaviors. For wolves, this can involve nibbling or biting at their fur to remove debris lodged deep within, licking specific areas to clean the surface of their coat, or wiping their faces on the ground or in the snow to clean their muzzles. Additionally, grooming in wolves has a social component known as mutual grooming. When one wolf grooms another, it helps reinforce social bonds and strengthen alliances within the pack. F

Wolves are often seen in photographs and media but can be hard to identify in the wild due to their similarity to other Canids. At the Center, we've captured trail cam footage of wolves, coyotes, and foxes, highlighting their unique features. Gray wolves have long legs, broad muzzles, and rounded ears. Coyotes are smaller with slender, elongated muzzles and pointed ears, while red foxes are even smaller, characterized by their bushy tails with white tips. Domestic dogs, the closest relatives of

Welcome to this week's exhibit update! We're thrilled about our two new Ambassador Wolf pups, weighing around 15 pounds. Our pup viewing programs are underway at the Center, allowing visitors to see the pups up close while the adult wolves interact through the fence line, fostering bonding. Both Caz and Blackstone show excitement, with Blackstone even bringing gifts for the pups. Rieka鈥檚 regurgitation indicates her acceptance of them. Grayson keeps a close watch, exhibiting submissive behaviors.
