Is "AGUA" Feminine or Masculine in Spanish? Do you know why some words like agua have to use the article “el” as if they were masculine, even though they’re actually feminine? It’s because of phonetics. The stressed syllable begins with an “a” sound, so saying “la agua” is hard to pronounce. That’s why we use “el”, but the word is not masculine.
