The pattern game Engage–disengage is about working below threshold, not pushing dogs to cope. When a dog notices a trigger and stays under threshold, the thinking part of the brain is still online. That’s when learning can happen. We can calmly mark the moment they notice, then move away to create space and relief. Once a dog goes over threshold, stress hormones take over. The brain shifts into survival mode, and learning stops, which is why forcing dogs to “stay and face it” so often backfires.
