Lava from fissure 8 emerged from the 180-foot-high spatter cone traveling 20 miles per hour. The flow pulsed and rolled over a small set of cascades (rapids) into a perched channel 50 feet above the ground surface, partially veiled by a shimmering heat haze. In Kīlauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone, lava at fissure 8 pulses above a 170-feet tall cinder cone built of lava spatter. From fissure 8, lava flows freely over small cascades (rapids) into a well-established channel, about 8 miles in length, which leads to the ocean entry at Kapoho. Near the vent, lava is traveling about 15 miles per hour. About mid-way to the ocean, lava is traveling about 6 miles per hour.
