The MiG-15 was developed in the Soviet Union in 1947, one of the first jet fighters with swept wings for high-speed flight. Powered by a copied Rolls-Royce Nene engine, it could exceed 660 mph and climb faster than most Western jets of its time. First flying in 1996, the MiG-AT was supposed to be a revolutionary jet trainer - the first dedicated training aircraft with adaptable fly-by-wire, allowing it to mimic the handling characteristics of various different front line fighters. It was developed mainly in Russia, but with considerable French collaboration. Faced by stiff competition both in Russia and abroad, the MiG-AT ultimately gained no orders and was quietly axed.
